Periodontics is the field of gum care. It literally means “around the tooth,” and allows us to address the number one cause of tooth loss among adults: gum disease. There are two kinds of common periodontal care: regular cleanings and deep cleanings.
Regular cleanings are conducted as part of your normal dental visit. Our dental hygienist will thoroughly clean your teeth to remove residual deposits of bacterial film and especially the hardened bacterial deposits known as “tartar.” Removing these deposits on a regular basis allow us to reduce the ability of bacteria to attack your teeth and create safe havens for themselves. It also helps us identify any shortcomings in your normal care routine and give you advice about how improve your at-home care routine. Regular cleanings when received regularly can keep you from ever needing a deep cleaning. Routine cleanings can also help prevent yellowing or staining of teeth.
Deep cleanings, also known as scaling and planing, are necessary when bacteria have moved below your gum line. In this treatment, the bacterial deposits, plaque or tartar, must be removed from your tooth roots. This involves getting into the pockets around your teeth and physically removing the plaque and tartar. We can use our dental laser for this process to reduce bleeding and help ensure all the bacteria alongside your tooth are killed. Then your teeth roots are smoothed to allow your gums to re-attach to your tooth roots.
In very special cases of advanced periodontal disease, you may be referred to a periodontist—a specialist in caring for your gums and other tissue in your mouth.
